We could not have wished for a better start to Sceau Royal’s new career over fences, the gelding making an impressive start in the novice chase at Warwick yesterday.

Daryl Jacob could not hide his delight afterwards, observing:”He is so fast at his obstacles – he was over hurdles – and it was just a case of educating him and getting him to do his own thing. He could be very good.”

Sceau Royal, a high-class hurdler who finished sixth in the Champion, revelled in the drying ground, and Alan, all smiles afterwards, having already won the opener with the heavily-backed Herewego Herewego, who missed all season following “niggle after niggle”, said:”Sceau Royal has only schooled twice over fences, so that was a very pleasing introduction.

“He might not be very big, but he has got plenty of scope, and, though he was a long way off a couple down the back he got there fine. He just fell short of the best over hurdles, but fences might eke a bit of improvement out of him and we might look at Cheltenham in a month’s time as if a novice can jump around Warwick like he did you can take him anywhere.”
