Thursday September 15

The sun has been shining in more ways than one at Barbury these last couple of weeks, and, hopefully, the good form of the horses will continue at the week-end, where we have important runners at Newbury tomorrow and Newmarket on Saturday.

Assessing our chances, Alan said:”Who Dares Wins runs in the Dubai Duty Free Handicap at Newbury. He is 3lb higher than when a beaten favourite at Nottingham last time and drops down in trip, but that should not be a problem as he showed plenty of speed when winning over this distance at Chester. Pat Dobbs, who rode him here, again takes the mount, and a shower of rain forecast overnight and through the morning will also not go amiss.

“In contrast, the more it stays dry for Ardamir in the finale the better. It’s his first handicap and his first run at a mile and a quarter. He was third at 12 furlongs here last month, but this looks very competitive and we are hoping for a solid run and a strong pace.

“We are also praying that Newmarket miss the rain as Oceane heads there on Saturday for the £50,000 Betfred Cesarewitch Trial. As I’ve said many times the key to this horse is the ground. He must have it fast and he won well at York last time when he got his conditions. He’s up another 4lb and we’re still thinking of the Cesarewitch itself if all goes well, but who knows what the ground will be like come October 8, so we need to make hay while the sun is still shining.

“Finally, we have another of our two-year-olds having his first run on the tapeta at Wolverhampton on Saturday. He’s called War Chief, and he’s by Aqlaam. I have been pleased with the youngsters, and it will be good to get him rolling.”
