Cosmopolitan, who hosed up under Serena Brotherton at Newbury on Saturday, has been put up 10lb by the official handicapper – “hopefully we can find another Flat race for him, but he’ll make a gorgeous juvenile hurdler,” predicted Alan, who has fingers crossed that Oceane keeps the ball rolling for the Flat team when he contests the two-mile handicap at York tomorrow.
Alan said:”Oceane was unlucky not to win the Goodwood Stakes last time – Fergus (Sweeney) could not get out of a pocket in the straight when he wanted and when they did finally escape he flew home” – but he is only a pound higher and, while it is another very competitive race, we are looking for a bold effort again.
“The ground is the key to him – he loves it fast and conditions looks like being perfect. It was too soft for him when he disappointed at York in June, but he showed at Goodwood what he can do when the going is on top and dropping back five furlongs won’t be a problem.
“We won the Cesarewitch for Max McNeill last year with Grumeti, and the Newmarket marathon is the plan for Oceane, but he will need to climb up the handicap a bit yet before he is guaranteed a run, so a solid effort here should help us inch up the ratings.”
