In the short time I have worked in racing I have quickly learned it can be full of high’s and lows, one moment the yard is celebrating Annacotty’s brilliant win in the Paddy Power and next waking up Monday morning to the news that John Goggin was in a critical condition in hospital from the result of serious car crash. For nearly one week John and the amazing staff at Southmead Hospital fought for his life, however on Saturday night John passed away leaving a gap in many peoples lives, one that will be never filled. Google, as we called him, was one of the most honest, loyal and hard working men I have ever met, and you only have to look around the yard to see the impact he had on so many of our lives, he would however be rather annoyed if there was no mention of horses in this update, and he certainly would want the show to go on. Our thoughts are with John’s family.
The horses have been running well on the whole as we look forward to the Hennessy meeting and the weekend runners. Its great to see so many of our younger horses who have shown great potential either on the racecourse or at home running so well, and although we may be missing some of our stable stars for one reason or another it certainly looks as though there are plenty of young pretenders waiting to make their mark.
Smad Place and Ned Stark take their chance in the Hennessy and both seem in great form, hopefully with a bit of luck in running they can both put up solid performances. We also introduce a few new faces to racecourse this weekend, some of whom have already raced in different country’s and some who will be racing for the first time, this is always an exciting time when you send the horses to race for the first time and hopefully they can give a account of themselves.
Thank you all very much for your kind words during this testing time at Barbury and hopefully in my next update we can relive what could hopefully be a great weekend for everyone here.
